Deputy Head Teacher / Professional Adviser (NSERE) at Welsh Government

Richard Jones is a Professional Adviser seconded to Welsh Government’s Education Directorate with a particular focus on the use of research and enquiry in education. Richard advises on other areas including artificial intelligence, a whole school approach to mental health and wellbeing, community focussed schools, approaches to enquiry in initial teacher education and additional learning needs.
Richard has 20+ years of experience in education in the primary and special sectors both as a classroom practitioner and senior leader. Before beginning his current role, Richard worked as the Deputy Head Teacher and Additional Learning Needs Coordinator at Llysfaen Primary School, a two-form entry English medium school in north Cardiff. During his 5 years at Llysfaen he was integral in cluster working on curriculum development and additional learning needs transformation.
Along with presenting at the BERA Conference in Manchester, Richard represented Wales at the Evidence for Education Network Conference in Santiago, Chile, in July 2024, which focussed on evidence for equity and educational transformation. Richard recently visited Florida as a guest of the University of Central Florida to explore their Community Partnership Schools model and international partnerships in professional learning. Following this visit, he is co-authoring a paper for the Wales Journal of Education on the impact of international learning partnerships on teacher professional learning. He is returning to Florida next February to present on the use of research and enquiry in schools in Wales.
