Omena Osivwemu is a Policy Officer for Race Equality in Education at the National Education Union (NEU), and formerly an experienced Primary School Teacher and Humanities Lead, having taught in Key Stage 1 and 2 across England and in Spain. Omena continues to work in schools as a Safeguarding Link Governor and Saturday School Teacher. Omena produces EdTech resources, consults for educational publishers and community organisations, and speaks on diversity and decoloniality in the classroom, working with organisations such as Teach First, Penguin Lit in Colour, BLAM UK, Aspiring Heads and Reconnect JA. Recently publishing educational blogs with Teaching with TES, The Hamilton Trust, and Diverse Educators, Omena has contributed to BERA’s Guide to Decolonising the Curriculum (2024). Her chapter details the international funded research project that Omena embarked on during her MA at the Institute of Education, UCL, honing in on Black learner and educator perspectives of decolonising the curriculum in London and Johannesburg, South Africa.
