Helen Sauntson, Professor

Helen Sauntson is Professor of English Language and Linguistics at York St John University. Much of her teaching and research focuses on LGBT+ issues, especially in relation to language and education. As a former teacher, Helen maintains an interest in how gender and sexuality identities are constructed through linguistic interaction in classroom settings. She is the author of Language, Sexuality and Education (Cambridge University Press, 2018), Approaches to Gender and Spoken Classroom Discourse (Palgrave, 2012), co-author of New Perspectives on Language and Sexual Identity (Palgrave, 2007), co-editor of Language, Sexualities and Desires: Cross-Cultural Perspectives (Palgrave, 2007), co-editor of Gender and Language Research Methodologies (Palgrave, 2008) and co-editor of Global Perspectives and Key Debates in Sex and Relationships Education (Palgrave, 2016). She has published in a wide range of academic journals and is co-editor of the Palgrave Studies in Language, Gender and Sexuality book series. Helen regularly liaises with local schools over LGBT+ issues and gender and sexual diversity more broadly.
