Alex Southern, Dr

Lecturer at Swansea University

Alex Southern is an Education Historian, with research interests in film education, arts and creativity in education, and community engagement.
Alex originally trained as a film archivist and began working in Commercial Access at the Imperial War Museum Film Archive, before re-training as a Lecturer in Further Education and taking up post as Head of Learning at the Yorkshire Film Archive. She has worked as a researcher in the charitable and public sector, and as an academic in Higher Education Institutions.
Alex is Programme Director of the MA Education in the Department of Education and Childhood Studies at Swansea University and teaches on both this programme, and the ‘National’ MA Education (Wales), a collaborative programme for teaching practitioners delivered across seven HEIs in Wales.
Alongside the ‘Embedding Research and Enquiry in Schools’ Project, Alex is currently researching creative writing in primary and secondary schools, the potential wellbeing benefits of a Community Garden, and the history of educational film in Britain.
