BERA is looking to set up a new SIG which would take as its remit to develop scholarship on alternative education, including understanding of what we may or can mean by that term in an international context. The special interest group would focus upon the practices, history, theory and philosophy underpinning and supporting any educational activity largely outside and different from ‘mainstream’ schooling, where these are using hierarchical and authoritarian structures, systems, pedagogy and ethos. This means that any mainstream schooling using democratic ‘manners’ and an emphasis on freedom for children in school settings falls within the interests of the group.
