Young people spend a great deal of their time online and using a range of social media platforms. Indeed, technology is integral to their daily way of life (OCED, 2018). However, the jury is out on whether or not this is advantageous or detrimental to a young person’s mental health and wellbeing.
With around half of all mental health issues starting before the age of 14, it is vital that both the impact – negative and positive – and potential benefits of using technology are urgently explored and understood, both in terms of prevention and treatment. Some argue that digital technologies and social media offer considerable opportunities and benefits to young people in terms of mental health whilst others believe this is not the case.
This conference will provide an opportunity for researchers, practitioners and policymakers to explore the impact of technologies and social media platforms on young people’s lives and look at the potential benefits and challenges of using technology to improve the delivery of mental health services for children and young people and implications for the education sector.
We invite 250-word abstracts for papers which have explored the role of technology in child and adolescent mental health. We interested in papers which address all phases of education. We are interested in papers that highlight both the positive and detrimental impacts of technology on child and adolescent mental health. We are interested in new perspectives on this theme which advance policy, theory and practice.
