Sustainability at the BERA Conference 2024 and WERA Focal Meeting
BERA is continually making a conscious effort to reduce our environmental impact. We have introduced the conference app for delegates on the day reducing the need for a printed programme. We have been reducing our catering numbers, looking at trends of attendance to reduce food wastage. We have been sourcing venues and social venues closer to transport links to reduce the need for driving and taxis to the conference.
For 2024 we will continue to go further. Below are a few examples:
- Printing – We will not have any printed programmes available at the conference. The mobile app will be available. The schedules are printed on the back of the badges. There will be giant screens available for viewing the app.
- Delegate packs – You can now purchase a delegate pack this year, which will include a reusable water bottle, coffee mug, zipped bag and much more.
- Catering – Where possible, the university buys in free range produce, including eggs, milk and organic vegetables. This year the venue is celebrating 19 years of being a Fairtrade University.
- The University of Manchester’s catering teams have achieved a number of awards for sustainability, including their residences catering team winning the prestigious Sustainable Restaurant Association’s Food Made Good Awards in the category of Best Food Waste Strategy.
- Drinking Water – There are drinking fountains on every floor of the buildings we are using that you can refill your water bottles.
- Waste – The venue will have multiple points around the building for recycling waste. These will include batteries, cans, cardboard, coffee cups, glass, paper and plastics.
- Emissions and Transport
- Free Public Transport – Free bus services operate around the city centre and are free of charge. All buses are wheelchair accessible. Please find more information below about the free bus services. https://tfgm.com/public-transport/bus/free-bus
- Electric vehicle charging points – If you intend to drive to the University in an electric vehicle, find out where our charging points are: Electric vehicle charging points
