Hello from Leeds!
We are very excited to be hosting the BERA Conference 2016 and are looking forward to welcoming you to Leeds. Rich in culture and heritage, it’s a vibrant city full of experiences, easy to explore with plenty to be discovered.
The fast-paced city centre contains one of the UK’s best city-centre shopping experiences. With over 1,000 shops to choose from you are never more than a few steps away from a great buy. Enjoy luxury labels to rival London or Milan with shops including Louis Vuitton, Vivienne Westwood and Mulberry in the prestigious Victoria Quarter. Experience boutique shopping in the Corn Exchange where you will find the very best in creative, innovative and independent retailers. Or grab yourself a bargain at Kirkgate Market, one of the largest indoor markets in Europe. Make sure you also visit Trinity Leeds, our newest retail and leisure destination – at the size of 13 football pitches it doesn’t fail to impress.
If you are more interested in heritage and culture, this city won’t disappoint. We have more than our fair share of stately homes, historic buildings, museums and galleries to keep you occupied. Highlights include: Harewood House with its outstanding collections of art, Chippendale furniture and Adams interiors; be taken on a journey of 3,000 years of military history at the Royal Armouries Museum; explore over 40 rooms at Temple Newsam, one of the country’s most celebrated historic houses; get up close and personal with over 200 species of rare birds at Lotherton Hall; explore the interactive galleries at Leeds City Museum and come face to face with the Leeds Tiger; enjoy one of the country’s finest collections of twentieth century British art at Leeds Art Gallery and the latest in contemporary art at the city’s newest attraction The Tetley. The majority of our museums and galleries are free so it won’t cost the earth to visit them!
By night Leeds really comes alive with its wide array of independent restaurants, bars, clubs and theatres. A choice of stylish bars may be found around the Corn Exchange whilst many traditional pubs are hidden gems amongst the alley ways off Briggate. We have a long and illustrious heritage as a city of entertainment here in Leeds which continues to flourish today. We boast our own opera and ballet companies and four theatres offering an eclectic mix of performances.
