Practical theory
The utility of social theory as tools and resources for the development of research methodology
This symposium aims to explore key issues and debates in designing and implementing research driven by use of contemporary social theory. It will highlight the importance of aligning theory with methodology and discuss some of the conceptual and practical issues arising from these applications. The event will provide a forum for participants to identify troublesome issues and discuss potential solutions.
Keynote speakers will include Professor Christina Hughes, PVC for Student Experience, Sheffield Hallam University, and Dr Ben Williamson, Lecturer in Education, University of Stirling. Linking the two speakers is a concern for ways in which Educational research methodology must face the challenges of dealing with an increasingly complex, interconnected, world. The two talks will direct our attention towards areas including data science, posthumanism, overcoming the qual/quant binary, feminism and governance, providing a stimulating basis for further discussion.
