Scottish and English teenagers split on whether university should be free
A difference of opinion between English and Scottish young people on how higher education should be funded has been captured in a study being presented to BERA today.
Around three quarters of Scottish teenagers interviewed for the research said university education should be funded through general taxation, as it currently is.
But in England, where students have to pay tuition fees of up to £9,000 a year, a majority of those who talked to researchers supported the principle that students should contribute at least a proportion of teaching costs.
The findings feature in research being presented to BERA today by Sarah Minty, a research fellow at the University of Edinburgh. Full details can be found here.
