Considering intelligence in the era of AI

There is currently, understandably, considerable debate about the potential and the risks of artificial intelligence in education. There are questions about implications for future curriculums, about implications for teaching, and about implications for assessment.

Underpinning possible responses to such questions are fundamental questions about the concept of intelligence itself. What does it mean to say that a tutoring or assessment system is intelligent? What do we mean by human intelligence? Can current assessment approaches continue to be relied on when AI systems appear proficient in some tasks and tests that were previously associated with human intelligence?  What form might future measures take? This webinar will be relevant to all nations in the UK and has a strongly global perspective – the authors will report on their international work with the OECD, United Nations and European Commission.

This webinar will provide a timely opportunity to engage with these questions. It will offer participants:

  • Theoretical Insights: An introduction to evolving definitions and approaches to measurement of intelligence in both humans and machines (as well as considering issues of collective intelligence, and animal intelligences).
  • Critical Perspectives: An examination of how societal framings of intelligence may influence educational policies and practices.
  • Interdisciplinary Dialogue: An opportunity to hear dialogue between researchers from different fields (Educational research and AI and measurement more generally).
