This fifth annual research symposium is collaboratively organised by UKLA and BERA

Target audience: Researchers, policy makers, teacher educators, teachers and teaching assistants working with learners aged 5-18 years and students across all phases of teacher education. Limited reduced cost places are also available for higher degree students researching in this area.

This is the fifth annual research symposium collaboratively organised by UKLA and BERA.

Chaired by Professor Sue Rogers (The Institute of Education), it draws together significant scholars whose recent research explores the synergies between literacy, play and playfulness. Professor Jackie Marsh (University of Sheffield) is known for her work on young children’s cultural practices and playful competences in the digital age. Her most recent book is Changing Play with Julia Bishop (Open University, 2014). Dr. Viv Smith (University of Strathclyde) is known for her research into the positioning of reading as a creative, playful and social practice, and the role of texts in this process. Professor Andrew Burn (Institute of Education, London) is known for his research into young people’s game play on playgrounds and the computer, their media literacy and film making. His most recent book is Children’s Games in the Age of New Media (2014, Ashgate). The intention of the day is to explore cutting-edge research which documents the playful engagement of learners from 3 -18 years and to advance our understanding of the role of play and playfulness in different literacy practices within and beyond the classroom. We will also seek to make connections between research, pedagogy and literacy learning.
