David was appointed to the post of lecturer in leadership and management in September 2018, having worked previously as an academic associate at IOE, UCL. He teaches on the BSc Education Studies course, the MSc Education programme, and is involved in doctoral teaching and supervision in Bristol and Hong Kong. Prior to working in HE, David worked in English secondary schools for over 30 years, latterly as principal of a large London comprehensive school rated as outstanding by Ofsted. He completed his doctorate at the Institute of Education, UCL, where the subject of his thesis was a comparative analysis of the Hong Kong Certification for Principalship (CFP) and the English National Professional Qualification for Headship (NPQH).
David’s research interests in the field of educational leadership and management focus on transformational and instructional leadership styles, and how these might enable school leaders to address Climate Change Education through teacher efficacy (individual and collective) and school culture. He is currently leading a research project addressing the issue: “From Anxiety to Insight to Action – how can we best support young people from diverse backgrounds to make their own response to the Climate and Ecological Emergency?”
