2020 BERA Publications Chair Election

We are pleased invite our members to apply to become BERA’s Publications Committee Chair, succeeding Vivienne Baumfield whose term will shortly come to an end. The role will commence in September 2020 and run for a period of four years.  

The Publications Chair will take an active and invaluable role in BERA’s governance, providing oversight and setting the strategic direction of all publishing activities, which are vital to the financial health and overall priorities of the Association. They ensure that BERA’s publications – including our four peer-reviewed journals, Research Intelligence and the BERA Blog – uphold the highest academic standards, follow best practice, respond to new developments and serve the interest of all members and communities within the education field. Given the fast-changing publishing environment, in terms of open access and beyond, we need strong leadership and insight to help future-proof our portfolio into the next decade. The Publications Chair is also a member of BERA Council and a Trustee of the Association.

This role includes:

  • Oversee BERA’s academic publishing activity and monitor its effectiveness in terms of quality, impact, reach and finance
  • Oversee, approve and monitor the range of and editorial arrangements across BERA’s publications, including the appointment of editors of Journals and other publications as appropriate
  • Chairing the Publications Committee and attending Council, GPC and other committees as appropriate
  • Working with the Executive Director and Publications Manager  in managing contractual relationships with publishers, ensuring that any arrangements uphold the highest academic standards

You will serve as a key member of the Association and therefore are expected to attend all Council, GPC and Publications Committee meetings. The time commitment during the period will normally be at around 20-25 days per year.

To be eligible to stand, candidates must be must be fully paid up members of BERA at the time of the nomination process opening and closing. No extensions are granted.

Candidates must not be ineligible to stand according to the rules set out by the Charity Commission or Companies House.
