Far away from the ivory tower
The impact of university education on disadvantaged people & their communities
Convenor
Dr Mark Leather is a co-convenor of BERA’s Nature, Outdoor Learning and Play (NOLAP) special interest group (SIG).
He is an associate professor of education, course tutor for the MRes in Outdoor Education/Outdoor Learning, and programme leader for the BA (Hons) in Outdoor Adventure Education, School of Education, Plymouth Marjon University.
Mark has a history of successful working in higher education. He previously had a career as a secondary school science teacher, but never found academic study an easy path when younger. This has helped him champion the underdog, and those who lack self-belief. He is passionate about students, especially the disadvantaged, and colleagues; helping them grow and develop their connections with themselves, other people, and nature. He prefers outdoor and experiential approaches for authentic learning. Mark loves the sea, nature, wild places, and learning from the "more-than-human" world, different people, countries, and cultures.
