Visual methods are increasingly being used in Educational Research. This workshop offers the opportunity to explore and use some of the methods. Participants will work with researchers who have applied these methods in their own research and provided with the opportunity for hands-on experience. There will be time for reflection and discussion of the methods and their theoretical frameworks.

Alison Fox, Diana Tremayne and Marc Sarazin will guide discussion about the pros and cons, dilemmas and comparisons between three different approaches to network visualisation exploring both data collection and analysis.

Using the picturebook, The Arrival (Shaun Tan, 2007) that tells a story of migration, Helen Hanna will take participants through the steps that she used in her research with primary school learners. She will give examples of how this linked to migrant children’s views on being new at school, and of how to support them.

Claire Forbes will demonstrate how forms of visual assets mapping might be facilitated and will reflect on its potential to enable participants with low levels of literacy or English as an Additional Language to share their perspectives on complex subjects. She used it to enable students to ‘map’ community resources that they identified, valued and used for positive educational outcomes.

Carmel Capewell has used Photo Voice to support participants in exploring and adding meaning of their experiences in a range of contexts. Participants will have a topic to work on and explore this method.

The BERA Early Career Researcher Network offers a limited amount of bursaries to the value of £75 towards travel for BERA Student Members only.

To apply for one of these bursaries, please complete the form with a statement on why you want to attend this event and why you need the financial assistance. Bursaries are offered on a first come, first served basis. Travel expenses will be reimbursed after the event in accordance with our travel policies. You must not have previously received bursary funding from BERA.
